Birth flowers are specific flowers traditionally given according to the month that a person is born. The months of the year are associated with particular flowers, a practice thought to have originated with Romans celebrating birth and birthdays. Their celebrations included an honoring of Roman Gods by decorating relics and memorials with flowers.

The birth flower for the month of May is the Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis). The flower is also known in Christian legend as Our Lady's tears or Mary's tears from a story that the plant sprang up from the weeping of Mary during the crucifixion. In Germanic mythology the blooming of lily of the valley flower heralds the feast of the virgin goddess Ostara and symbolises life in Pagan legend.
In the Victorian Era, when etiquette restricted free expression of love or feelings of affection, the presentation of flowers evolved specific meanings which the suitor wished to convey. The meanings attributed to the sweet-pea are modesty and simplicity.
