Birth flowers are specific flowers which are traditionally given according to the month that a person is born. The months of the year are associated with particular flowers, thought to have originated with Romans celebrating birth and birthdays. Their celebrations included an honoring of Roman Gods by decorating relics and memorials with flowers.

The birth flower for the month of April is the Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus). The name derives from its Latin name Lathyrus odoratus meaning 'pea' and 'fragrant'. Sweetpea is a flowering plant in the genus Lathyrus in the family Fabaceae (the legume family). The plant is native to the eastern Mediterranean and is thought to have originated in Italy around the 17th century.

The sweet pea produces fragrant pastel-colored flowers and is a climbing plant, growing to a height of 1–2 meters where there is sufficient support for it to climb on.

In the Victorian Era, when etiquette restricted free expression of love or feelings of affection, the presentation of flowers evolved specific meanings which the suitor wished to convey. The meanings attributed to the sweet-pea are modesty and simplicity.
