The tradition of giving flowers as birthday gifts began with the Romans. Each month is associated with a particular flower, which is believed to originate with Romans celebrating birth and birthdays by honoring their Gods and decorating relics and memorials with flowers.
October's birth month flowers are of the daisy family, Marigolds (Genus: Tagetes or Calendula). The Marigold is an annual which blooms over a long period, practically the entire of the summer. The flowers name comes from the Greek and means 'winning grace'. It was considered quite sacred in ancient India and was often hung around the neck of holy statues. Marigold petals are actually edible and are sometimes added as a spice or garnish to a dish. Marigold has also been used to replace Saffron in cheese colouring.
Calendula should be avoided during pregnancy and is known to cause allergic reactions [See here].
The use of flowers to convey meaning developed largely in the Victorian era. Etiquette restricted the free expression of love or feelings of affection and so the presentation of flowers evolved specific meanings which the suitor wished to convey. The messages assigned to the Marigold were designed to symbolise sorrow and sympathy.
