The tradition of giving flowers as birthday gifts began with the Romans. Each month is associated with a particular flower, which is believed to originate with Romans celebrating birth and birthdays by honoring their Gods and decorating relics and memorials with flowers.
September's birth month flower is the genus Aster (Aster amellus). The flowers name comes from the Greek and means 'star-shaped'. The use of flowers to convey meaning developed largely in the Victorian era. Etiquette restricted the free expression of love or feelings of affection and so the presentation of flowers evolved specific meanings which the suitor wished to convey. The messages assigned to the Aster were designed to symbolise Love, Faith, Wisdom and Valor.
